During an annual wellness exam, your healthcare provider utilizes a list of tests and evaluations tailored to your age, gender, and potential risk factors. These checks may involve:
- Assessing weight, height, and Body Mass Index (BMI): These measurements help determine your overall health status.
- Examining heart rate and blood pressure: These levels can be influenced by various factors such as stress, sleep, smoking, diet, and exercise. Abnormal levels can lead to long-term health issues.
- Examination of the heart and lungs: This helps identify any irregular heartbeats or respiratory concerns that may indicate a cardiac disease.
- Conducting a full-body exam: This includes checking the eyes, skin, stomach, and reflexes for any abnormalities.
- Gender-specific checks: These could be breast exams or testicular exams.
- Addressing specific concerns: If you're experiencing certain symptoms, your provider will investigate and, if needed, refer you to a specialist for further treatment.
What examinations are performed at a yearly wellness physical?
During a typical annual wellness checkup, your healthcare provider might conduct the following tests:
- Blood sample analysis: This may include liver function tests, kidney function tests, and an electrolyte panel to assess the blood's chemical levels.
- Urine examination: This could involve tests for sugar, protein, or blood in the urine, and possibly a urine culture to detect Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs).
- STI screenings: Depending on your sexual history or symptoms, your provider might suggest STI tests.
What follows a yearly wellness physical examination?
Once your yearly wellness checkup is complete and if you’re in good health with normal test results, you’ll likely repeat the process every 12 months. Your provider may also suggest ways to maintain or enhance your health. In case of any detected issues or abnormal results, you might require further tests or appointments. Your provider will probably consult with you about the results and devise a tailored treatment strategy based on your health status.
